AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. This is your debut novel. Congratulations. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

It’s hard for me to pin down one specific inspiration for this book. There are a lot of little ones. I think that a big part of developing Kenzie’s story was where I was at in my own life. I had just made two major moves in the span of six months, and I was 1100 miles from my family. I felt like the only one I could lean on was God, so reliance on Him became one of the key themes of Kenzie’s story. I also had a friend from high school who made some really poor choices and ended up in prison for five years. His sister asked me to write to him, and I did. For five years we wrote back and forth, and his letters made me wonder if there was anything that would cause someone to willingly go to prison. It all just developed from there.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

Well, my characters wouldn’t be mine if they didn’t have reflections of me and my experiences tucked in there. My relationship with Jesus Christ is really important to me, so it’s essential that my faith is reflected in their lives. A lot of times the spiritual lessons that I’m learning end up being core themes in my WIP. On a more individual basis, I’ve noticed that certain characters have picked up some of my bad habits—Kenzie Thorn has a terrible habit of putting her foot in her mouth, which I’m completely guilty of. Sometimes I give my characters traits that may be similar to my own struggles but aren’t exact. While writing my second manuscript, I realized that I have a terrible habit of shopping any time I’m feeling stressed and worried, and I saw that my hero had his own comfort activity in drinking coffee, which I really hate. That's definitely his alone.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Kenzie would definitely be a peppermint ice cream. She's both sweet and spicy--as Myles always says she is.

4. Are there any themes in The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

As I was writing this, God was busy teaching me about relying on Him, so that's definitely one of the biggest themes in the book. I hope readers will see that God can be relied on in every situation. He cares for those who hope is in Him. Less planned themes include how men will fail us, but God is constant and the need for forgiveness.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The first couple chapters were definitely the hardest to write. I always find the first bit tough, as I'm still trying to figure out where the characters are going. But once I got rolling, my favorite part of to write was the chase scene through the forest. Myles is chasing after Kenzie, and it's high intensity. I love writing the heart-pounding moments.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next book isn't under contract yet, but I've just completed my second novel, a follow up to Kenzie and Myles's story. I'm eagerly waiting to hear from my editor about it. It's the story of Myles's boss, Special Agent in Charge Nate Andersen, and the girl he's trying to find. It's a fun romp through fictional Crescent City, Colorado.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. This is your debut novel. Congratulations. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

Hi everyone, and thank you so much, Tiff, for inviting me today! The story’s inspiration. . . . Oddly, it wasn’t one main factor, but four: 1) a lifetime of travel in which I toured Civil War homes and battlefields and the Old West (for years curiosity frequently tugged at me and I wondered What was happening in the West during the Civil War?) 2) moving around a lot—I’ve lived in 27 cities and towns in 8 states so far—meant I often had to say goodbye (one of the main themes of Love’s Rescue), 3) the unexpected death of my best friend when she was thirty years old (her friendship inspired the friendship in the story) and 4) a gripping one-man play which I saw years ago at Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada called The Ghosts of the Opera House. The play spoke deeply to me, and the actor made eye contact with me once in a way that made me feel he was doing the play specifically for me. The characters of the Old West came alive through that actor, and I felt that their story had to be told.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

I horseback rode halfway across Arizona on a ten-day trip, which came in handy writing the scenes with horses and bad and cold weather. The cowboy coffee scene which provides good comedy in the book was similar to one I went through when, shivering clear through to my bones, I learned to appreciate hot, chunky cowboy coffee. Even with the rain and cold, I loved the relationship with my horse, and the feeling of going high speed with nothing—no doors, no windows—between myself and the wind. Jess has the same love of horses and riding.

My handgun training evolved into a turn-up-the-air-conditioning-variety romantic scene between Jake and Jess. Also, an angel visited me in the hospital once (I had kidney failure), and, when I asked her if I was going to die, told me that I “was just a little butterfly,” which meant I wasn’t done yet. The nickname “Butterfly” appears in the book. My tenacity (different folks have called it by different terms ) becomes Jess’s, as does my enjoyment of God’s creation and of simple pleasures. Jess’s sheer grit is a solid step above my own, and the uniqueness of the several cultures present in the characters were those I observed in others or drew from diaries of those who lived in the West during the time period the book takes place. I strove to make them as real and as unique as could be.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

What a fascinating question! Hmm. Lemon sorbet. Jess loves cold, sweet lemonade on a hot summer day, and she’s got too much kick to be any mildly flavored ice cream. She’s one you meet and don’t easily forget.

4. Are there any themes in Love's Rescue that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

I’m thrilled you asked that question. A few themes weave very subtly through the story, but I hope the reader catches two in particular: The first: If you must marry, choose your future spouse wisely! The second is subtle, but it’s the foremost spiritual theme: Due to Christ’s death and resurrection, we never have to say goodbye to those we love. Women who have lost a family member and have read Love’s Rescue have commented how much that touched them.

It’s funny, but I didn’t have either of these themes in mind as I first wrote the story. When I finished a few rewrites, they became more and more clear, like seeing stars in the night sky as you drive further and further from the light noise of a city.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

Most difficult: page one. I’d wanted it to begin with Jess’s brother, Ambrose, writing to her from the Civil War, but it just didn’t want to happen that way. Favorite: Jess’s first escape scene. Adventure and suspense is always fun to write, but this scene, with so much at stake for Jess and her and Jake’s personalities and intentions clashing, it was tremendous fun.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

The second book in the series, Hope’s Promise, should be out next summer. Jake and Jessica Bennett learn there was more to her parents’ deaths than they knew, and both the ranch and Jessica are in danger. Now they must quickly find the murderer . . . and discover for themselves how far they will go for love.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. This is your debut novel. Congratulations! What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I felt compelled to express a mosaic of experiences I've had over the last decade in emergency service. I wanted to relate for the reader in a palpable, genuine fashion what it's like to be in a firehouse- the dinner table banter, sliding three story poles, sleep deprived nights, and screaming down the street to a structure fire. But more than just that, I wanted to deliver through my characters a story of loss and redemption, of death and life, and to reflect a bit of the greatest story ever told.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

Writing in first person, I approached the main protagonist Aidan O'Neill much in the way a method actor would a role- working to infuse natural inclinations and thoughts into his worldview and actions.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Irish cream.

4. Are there any themes in Through the Fire that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

Loss and redemption. That the Lord gives and the Lord takes away- and blessed is the name of the Lord.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

Some of the fire and emergency scenes became very dynamic with a number of technical things going on- I endeavored to keep the story moving and make sure the reader understood what was transpiring while still keeping it true to life. I really enjoyed writing Aidan in Mexico during the Dia de los Muertos celebrations.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My second novel is slated for a summer 2010 release and is about a Reno paramedic who feels like he's chasing the Angel of Death.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I knew I wanted to write a love story between two childhood friends who were torn apart and then returned to love. The details just fell into place after I figured out that much. I think friendship-turned-to-love stories are so special to me because that is my love story with my husband.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

I love penguins, just like Gracie, so it seemed fitting she'd work at the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. Also, like Gracie, I have trouble letting go of long-held grudges from people who have deeply hurt me. The hero in this story, Carter, dealt with a sinful, rebellious past, which is not something I can personally relate to. That struggle was his alone and he actually taught me a lot from it!

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Fun question! Let's see. Gracie would be strawberry, because she's mostly sweet, with a little tang - especially as a red-head! =) Carter would be Rocky Road, becase, well - he's had enough bumps over his lifetime, and he seems the type to like a mixture of tastes!

4. Are there any themes in Return to Love that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

I hope the reader sees the importance of forgiveness in this novel. It's truly the strongest element throughout, as well as the power of love between friends. History runs deep! I don't believe this story has any overt themes that sneaked past me. But my characters always seem to surprise me somehow along the way! =)

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

One of my favorite scenes to write in this story was the walking tour of New Orleans. I loved incorporating the flavor and historical, cajun elements into the scene, coupled with the tension between the characters. The hardest part to write was probably the ending. It's so hard for me to wrap up stories, because I hate to see my characters "finished"!!!

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

I'm so glad you asked! My next novel with Steeple Hill Love Inspired releases February 2010 and is the sequel to RETURN TO LOVE. It's titled, A VALENTINE'S WISH and picks up with Lori, Gracie's best friend. Lori leaves the aquarium gift shop to work in a chocolate boutique in the french quarter as a favor to a friend, and ends up discovering she has a secret admirer. It will be a fun Valentine's read!

Spotlight on Allie Pleiter and Bluegrass Blessings

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

ALLIE PLEITER is an avid knitter, coffee junkie, and devoted chocoholic, who writes both fiction and non-fiction. The enthusiastic but slightly untidy mother of two, Allie spends her days writing books, doing laundry, running carpools, and finding new ways to avoid housework. She grew up in Connecticut, holds a BS in Speech from Northwestern University, spent fifteen years in the field of professional fund-raising, and currently lives in suburban Chicago, Illinois. The “dare from a friend” to begin writing nine years ago has given rise to a career spanning two parenting books, eight novels including the multi-nominated MY SO-CALLED LOVE LIFE, and THE PERFECT BLEND.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Everyone in Middleburg, Kentucky lines up for baker Dinah Hopkins’s cinnamon rolls. Everyone except her handsome new landlord, Cameron Rollings. The jaded city man doesn’t like anything about small-town life--from the fresh air to her fresh-baked snickerdoodles. And he clearly considers Dinah as quirky as her eccentric oven. The way to Cameron’s heart is not through his toned stomach. But the Lord led him to Kentucky Corners for a reason. And Dinah plans to help him count his bluegrass blessings.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I end up with such unusual plot lines that I get asked this a lot. I don’t really know where the stories come from, and frankly, I’m afraid if I analyze the inspiration too deeply it’ll dry up and go away (classic author paranoia, you know). The opening scene invaded my brain one night, pure and simple. Of course, I knew Dinah’s basic character from the other Middleburg books in the series, and from there it’s usually a game of opposite’s attract. Boy, are they opposite, and boy, do they attract!

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

Well, I can’t bake to save my life, even though I’m a competent cook. Without giving away too much of the plot, I have received an earth-shattering phone call like Dinah gets, so that “upended world” sensation is one I’ve lived through. And many people who know me well would argue that I share Dinah’s crazy artistic nature. I also am a bit of a control freak (conflict, anyone?), so Cameron’s “must manage” nature is part of mine. I suppose it goes without saying that I’m fond of cookies...and muffins...and scones...

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Dinah would be something extreme and mixed up, like Rocky Road or one of the zillions of combinations from Coldstone. Perhaps something with nuts and strawberry in it as a nod to her wild red hair.
Cameron I think of as a mint-chip kind of guy--basic but with more pizzaz than you give him credit for at first.

4. Are there any themes in Bluegrass Blessings that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

I love to write about characters who believe they are beyond their capacity to cope. Taken to that fertile but frenzied spot where if God doesn’t show up in big ways you are sunk for sure. Someone once said I write characters who discover they are more then who they thought they were, and I love that description. The story became more and more about u-turns as I wrote the book, mostly because the u-turns showed up as I took the characters through the plot. Poor Cameron and Dinah, I really made them miserable before I made them happy...

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

I can’t give away the most difficult scene without giving away a major plot point, so I’ll defer on that one, but I suspect you’ll know it when you read it. The stakes are higher for my characters in this book than in any I’ve written, I think. As for my favorite scene, the one where Cameron dupes Howard into buying burnt cookies is my favorite, just because it is so deeply embedded in each of their natural impulses. How many other authors can say they’ve invented philanthropic burnt cookies?

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

Next will be BLUEGRASS CHRISTMAS in the fall--October/November just in time for the holiday season. It is Mac MacCarthy’s story--you’ve met Mac in BLUEGRASS HERO. I had a field day with the holiday spirit on this one, turning Middleburg inside out with a toy craze and the Christmas Pageant to end all Christmas pageants!
