ABOUT THE BOOK

Susie passed out while drinking at Jeff’s party and later discovered she’s pregnant. She has no idea who the father is and considers having an abortion, but instead decides to place her baby for adoption. Following through ends up being more wrenching than she imagined, but she’s determined to do the right thing for her baby.

Jeff feels guilty that Susie was taken advantage of at his party and offers to marry her so she won’t have to give up her baby, like his birth mother did with him. But Susie refuses, insisting he should he marry someone he loves. Can he convince her that his love is genuine before it’s too late? Can she make him understand that it’s not about him—it’s about what’s best for her child?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

My inspiration came from a secondary character's plight in the first book. It just naturally worked into a sequel. Then I thought about all of the beautiful open adoptions I've been involved in and decided to show how good it can be for everyone involved if done properly.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

My experience regarding this book came mostly from my social work background and experience in both closed and open adoptions. I also have adopted cousins and friends who have adopted children. What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone? The whole dynamic between Jeff and Susie is their own issue. It's not modeled after anything in particular. However, the issue with Jeff does reflect a real life adoption issue I have dealt with before.

3. Are there any themes in It's Not About Him that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

Sacrificing your own desires for the benefit of another person (who is innocent) is the practical demonstration of real love. Also, your poor choices or mistakes don't have to define who you are. Also, just because you are not ready to be a mother doesn't mean your only alternatives are abortion or being a parent. Open adoptions are something many people are not familiar with but they are legal and beautiful when they are done the right way. Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as your family's story unfolded? Trying to do the right thing for the wrong reasons can be disastrous.

4. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

When Susie hands the family her newborn baby. Makes me sob every time I read it. Your favorite? The first kiss. I love to write first kisses. They have to make your toes curl or they aren't good enough. :)

5. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

Here is a convoluted answer. If you mean the next book in the series, then it's Sept 2010. If you mean my next book period, then I can tell you I have four books coming out next year.

6. Is there anything additional that you'd like to share with my readers?

Nope. Just that I appreciate the chance to chat with your fans. :)

A SILENT FURY
by Lynette Eason
Published by Steeple Hill/Love Inspired Suspense

ABOUT THE BOOK

One Dead. One Taken. Tragedy strikes Palmetto Deaf School—twice. With one student murdered and another missing, it's up to homicide detective Catelyn Clark to find the killer—and probable kidnapper—fast. She'll even work with her ex-boyfriend, FBI agent Joseph Santino, to solve the case…while keeping her distance. Relationships between cops never work; her parents taught her that. They also taught her that the only one she can rely on is herself. But when the killer starts targeting Catelyn, it's only by opening her heart to faith—and love—that she can finally bring the silent fury to an end.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I used to work at the Deaf school here in my hometown of Spartanburg, SC. The first book in the series, A SILENT TERROR was bases VERY loosely on my experience teaching and this second story stemmed from a combination of things. Rumors of gangs in our town and a series of robberies that took place a couple of years ago in a neighbourhood across town from where I live. I simply combined all that and let my imagination have free reign. :)

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

Well, obviously, I put a lot of my teaching experience into the stories that have teachers and being around deaf people and having some close deaf friends influenced my characters greatly.

Traits that are theirs and theirs alone? I think Marianna’s insistence that she doesn’t want a cochlear implant. I understand her situation and the way she feels about that, but if I ever experienced deafness to the point that one might help me, I would probably consider it. Most people deaf from birth won’t even think about it. Notice I said, MOST, not all.

3. Are there any themes in A Silent Fury that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed

Acceptance. Forgiveness is a big one. Self discovery.

Not overt? That sometimes we can accept God’s love and forgiveness, but we have a hard time forgiving ourselves of things we consider “unforgivable”. That forgiving others is necessary for spiritual growth.

4. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The hardest thing to write was Catelyn’s parents. They didn’t get along, deliberately antagonized each other and basically created an atmosphere of tension that my heroine was desperate to escape. My parents were nothing like hers in the story so it took some work imagining all of the things she may have gone through as a child, a teenager looking to be loved, etc.

Your favorite - As always, the happy ending.

5. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

After A SILENT FURY, book 3 will be out in November. It’s called A SILENT PURSUIT and features characters from the first two books, Gina Santino is on the run from a killer that seems to know her every move. The only man who can help her is one she considers a traitor to his Ranger Unit. Sparks fly as they dodge bullets and the bad guys and soon they realize that all is not as it seems. Also, in February 2010, Steeple Hill is releasing an anthology called MY DEADLY VALENTINE. I wrote one of the two books in it. Mine is called DARK OBSESSION and Valerie Hansen wrote the other, DANGEROUS ADMIRER. Then in April, 2010, my first REVELL book, TOO CLOSE TO HOME comes out. It is book 1 in the WOMEN OF JUSTICE series and I’m REALLY excited about that.

6. Is there anything additional you'd like to share with my readers?

Thank you so much for allowing me to be here. I appreciate it! You can purchase my books through any online retailer, in fact here at this blog is a great place to check out the books you might be interested in buying, but I really encourage you to support your local Christian Bookstore.

Again, thanks for having me, Tiff, you rock!

Spotlight on Janice Thompson and Fools Rush In

Two favorite authors in the same week? How'd I get so lucky? :) Today's spotlight author is not only a favorite but a great friend as well. She's been a wonderful mentor, encourager and given me great support in my career. It's my privilege to introduce her to you today.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

JANICE THOMPSON is an award-winning author who also writes under the pseudonym Janice Hanna. She got her start in the industry writing screenplays and musical comedies for the stage. Janice has published over fifty books for the Christian market, crossing genre lines to write cozy mysteries, historicals, romances, nonfiction books, devotionals, children's books and more. In addition, she enjoys editing, ghost-writing, public speaking, and mentoring young writers. Janice currently serves as Vice-President of CAN (Christian Authors Network) and was named the 2008 Mentor of the year for ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers). She is active in her local writing group, where she regularly teaches on the craft of writing. Janice is passionate about her faith and does all she can to share the joy of the Lord with others, which is why she particularly enjoys writing. She lives in Spring, Texas, where she leads a rich life with her family, a host of writing friends, and two mischievous dachshunds. She does her best to keep the Lord at the center of it all.

FOOLS RUSH IN
by Janice Thompson
Published by Baker/Revell Publishing

ABOUT THE BOOK

Ever wonder how Italian sounds with a Southern drawl?

Bella Rossi's life is just starting to get interesting. When her Italian-turned-Texan parents hand over the family wedding-planning business, Bella quickly books a Boot-Scootin' wedding that would make any Texan proud. There's only one catch--she doesn't know a thing about country music. Where will she find a deejay on such short notice who knows his Alan Jackson from his George Strait? And will Bella ever get to plan her own wedding?

Fun, fresh, and full of surprises, this flavorful combination of Italian and Tex-Mex highlights the hilarity that ensues when cultures clash.

Endorsements

"I fell in love with the Rossi clan, who feel as passionately about their pizza as Texans do about chili. Add a hunky cowboy with a slow Southern drawl, and you've got a recipe for one terrific story."--Virginia Smith, author, Stuck in the Middle

"A charming tale about stumbling upon love and finding a bit of your true self along life's journey. This fun read makes you grateful for the truly important things in life."--Megan DiMaria, author, Searching for Spice and Out of Her Hands

MY REVIEW

Fools Rush In is a combination of My Big Fat Greek Wedding meeting a hilarious group of Italian Texans. Like the tagline says above. Ever wondered what a southern accent sounds like in Italian? :)

This book has it all -- a pizza-making uncle with ties to the mob, a woman who shouts in Italian while shaking a broomstick at unruly children, more cowboy boots than you could ever need, and a wedding planner with a penchant for misunderstandings.

And this is only book 1! If the rest of the books in this series prove to be as hilarious as the first, this series will find a favorite spot on my bookshelf. I know for a fact that the author is a previous wedding coordinator, and from the stories she's told, I'm sure some of them will end up in her books.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

In the spring of 2007, I settled into bed with my laptop. . .not an unusual occurrence. I didn’t have a story in mind. In fact, I was on vacation at the time and wasn’t even thinking about writing. However, the moment I saw that empty white screen, I felt like typing. Don’t ask me why, but the words, “If Uncle Lazarro hadn’t left the mob, I probably wouldn’t have a story to tell” shot out of my fingertips. I stared at the screen, more than a little curious. Who was Uncle Lazarro, and why was he in the mob? Worse still, why was he bothering me in the middle of my vacation?

Those who know me know I’m a plotter. I usually plot out an entire story before writing a word. So, for this very “calculating” author to stare at those “inspired” words and not have a clue where she was going with them was unusual, to say the least. Terrifying, even. A normal person would have closed the laptop and rolled over, forgetting about the whole thing. But an inspired person? Well, an inspired person (a.k.a. writer) has no choice but to keep going, even when all of the signs point at impending doom. Or a really funny story.

I stared at the words awhile longer, this time praying for wisdom from on high. Was I really supposed to take these cryptic words and shape them into a story? If so, what would come next? I drew in a deep breath and waited. Moments later, my fingers started flying. Wonder of wonders! I typed blindly, without thinking. A couple of paragraphs later, I had all of my questions about Uncle Lazarro answered and found myself laughing hysterically as I typed. (By the way, this is how a comedy writer knows her words are not her own. Who among us is really that funny?)

About an hour later, I had written the entire prologue to the book that would become FOOLS RUSH IN. I’d not only introduced Uncle Laz, but the entire Rossi family. Best of all, I had a wacky new heroine, Bella, to wrap the story around. When I signed off of the computer that night, I had the strongest sense she would lead me through the rest of the tale.

Thank goodness, I was right. Bella Rossi—a quirky Italian wedding planner from Galveston Island—had quite a story to tell. And thankfully, she chose me to share it with. Through Bella, I learned that cultures can clash, families can squabble, chaos can reign, and weddings can rule the day. . .but in the end, true love always wins out.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

Usually my own experiences play a huge role in my stories, but not this one. Bella and I don’t have much in common. She’s thin, young and gorgeous and I’m. . .well, I’m not. :) Her wacky Italian family is light-years away from my own, too. These things came from my somewhat overactive imagination! The only things about Bella’s story that ring true to my own life are the setting (Galveston Island, near my home in the Houston area) and the sequined church ladies. (Long story there. I don’t think your readers have the time or the energy for it.) As far as the role my own life experiences played in creating Bella, I would have to confess that I do have some of the same insecurities. I take on big challenges (much like she does in taking over the wedding facility), only to wonder later if I’ve bit off more than I can chew! Still, the Lord always manages to come through, in spite of my stumbles and bumbles!

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Bella would be Rocky Road, no doubt about it. She’s got a lot of “stuff” in her life, and the path isn’t always smooth. But, oh! Talk about delicious, especially once D.J. (her love interest) enters the scene!

4. Are there any themes in Fools Rush In that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

Fools Rush In has a wonderful family theme. The Rossi family is loud, fun and in your face. But they’re a terrific bunch. I hope that readers see a bit of their own family members in these quirky characters. As for themes that developed as the story progressed, I would have to say that “coincidences” (or “God incidences”) played a major role in the progression of the story. We often look at things as coincidence (or happenstance) when, in reality, God is giving up opportunities to try new things and meet new people.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

I honestly can’t think of one part of the book that was difficult to write. I did spend an extra amount of time tweaking the prologue because I wanted it to be just right, especially Uncle Laz’s Damascus Road experience. One of my favorite sections to write is also found in the prologue:

How my uncle settled on Galveston Island is another story altogether, one that involves the untimely passing of my beloved Aunt Bianca, may she rest in peace. Upon her deathbed, she mumbled these strange and startling words: “Toss my ashes into the Gulf of Mexico.” At least we think she said the Gulf of Mexico. My mother insists she must’ve meant Galva Messio’s, her favorite shoe store. Then again, my mom is always looking for an excuse to shop.

Regardless, the entire Rossi clan ended up in Texas, a far cry from Atlantic City, not just in miles, but in personality. Transplanting the whole group of us—three adults and five children—was no small feat. And the little things nearly proved to be our undoing. For example, I spent the better part of my elementary years figuring out how to transition from “you guys” to “y’all,” something I thought would never come naturally. Now, I can “y’all” with the best of ‘em.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

The second book in the WEDDINGS BY BELLA series is titled SWINGING ON A STAR and it releases in December. Here’s the synopsis:

Bella Rossi's life is nearing perfection. She's got the perfect guy, she's running a successful business, and she's about to plan her most ambitious wedding yet, a Renaissance-themed fairy tale come true, complete with period costumes and foods, horse-drawn carriages, and even a castle. There's just one hitch. The best man just happens to be Brock Benson, Hollywood's hottest and most eligible bachelor. Oh, and did we mention he's staying at the Rossi house to avoid the paparazzi?

With all the pressure surrounding this wedding, Bella's not sure she's going to make it through. Add her star-struck sister, her feuding aunt and uncle, and a trio of large, sequined church ladies with even bigger personalities, and you've got a recipe for disaster--and a lot of laughs. This hilarious romantic comedy is sure to delight both fans and new readers alike.

Spotlight on Tracie Peterson and Dawn's Prelude

I'm honored and privileged to host one of my all-time favorite authors and friends on my blog today. Can't believe it took this long for me to actually request the interview. :) After all, Tracie and her husband, Jim, are the reason I'm published today, and they had quite the influence in my first book being sold to Barbour Publishing. And it all started with an email back in 1998 to say how much I loved her books. Today, I count them among my treasured friends.

Now, you see why having Tracie here is such an honor!

This is a 2-part spotlight, with the CFBA feature coming next week. The free book giveaway will be drawn from the names of those who post on both spotlights, but you need only post in one or the other to be entered. Good luck!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

Sitka, on Baranof Island is a fascinating place. I've been there on many occasions and the history is so stimulating and intriguing. While there, I learned so much about the Tlingit people who were first to the island, the Russians and their influence, and of course early Americans and their contributions. It's a wonderful place with incredible people and stories of hardship and endurance. It seemed the perfect place to set a series.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

I try to create characters that can appeal universally to the reader. I want each of the readers to see themselves in the story. I utilize experiences like walking through a mossy spruce sheltered cemetery. I want to talk about the misty rain that fell, the smell of the earth and moss and spruce. I want to share the feeling of silence and awe at this quiet burial ground. Those are the kind of experiences that I use to influence the characters and hopefully the reader. I also work hard to let the character lead. In that, I mean that as the story develops I often find my characters wanting to do something I hadn't planned. That might sound strange, but it happens a lot. When it does, I go with it, because that's when I know the character and not just my outline, is directing the story.

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

What a fun question. In this story, I would have to say my heroine is a rocky road, because that's exactly the life she's had. She's got a past that fulls of nuts and marshmallows. My hero is a rich butter pecan. He is simple, yet complex and rich. He surprises the heroine with his strength in gentleness.

4. Are there any themes in Dawn's Prelude that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

Dawn's Prelude deals with some of the issues related to "Where is God when bad things happen to the innocent?" I think it's a question we all ask at one time or another. We look at a bad situation and find ourselves confused as to why God would allow it, and if He really loves us - why didn't He stop it. The issue of learning to trust after betrayal is also another important issue. I try to find themes that work well for the storyline, but also are a universal issue for people today. I want to share the Gospel message in my stories, but also to offer good sound Bible application for issues and events that are sometimes overwhelming.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

I loved doing the research in Sitka and exploring the possibilities for my characters. It was great fun to learn about the army's control of the city and how the people lived in coordination with them. It was sad to see how the Tlingit were treated, but easy to recognize the fear of those in charge. I found that often difficult. Difficult also to see how the missionaries, in keeping with the attitudes and beliefs of the day, treated the Tlingits. It caused a lot of division and sorrow. My prayer is that we've learned from some of those mistakes. Over all, I also enjoyed developing characters who loved music. I had music in my background and so my love of music gets to have an outlet in my characters.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

The next book out is book #2 in this series Song of Alaska. It's titled MORNING'S REFRAIN and picks up about 19 years later and deals with the next generation of people. The old characters from book one will reappear, and issues that take place in book one will have consequences and complications for book 2. Book 3 TWILIGHT'S SERENADE will conclude the series and come out in summer 2010.

Book Review: The Frontiersman's Daughter by Laura Frantz

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

LAURA FRANTZ -- I was born and raised in Kentucky and my love of history goes deep - way back to the 18th-century when my family first came into the Bluegrass State. It will always be home to me, even though I now live with my husband, Randy, and my sons, Wyatt and Paul, in the misty woods of northwest Washington. I go back as often as I can to visit family and all the old haunts that I love.

I grew up playing on the original site of Fort Boonesborough and swimming in the Kentucky River and climbing the Pinnacle near Berea and watching the great outdoor dramas of the early settlers. Often my cousins and brother and I would play in my Granny's attic and dress up in the pioneer costumes she made us and pretend to be Daniel Boone, Rebecca, Jemima, or the Shawnee.

As I grew up I began to write stories and they were always historical, filled with the lore I had heard or read about. It's no accident that my first book (which is actually my fifth book - the others were practice!) is about those first Kentucky pioneers.

I feel blessed beyond measure to write books. My prayer is that you are doubly blessed reading them.

Note: Laura Frantz credits her 100-year-old grandmother as being the catalyst for her fascination with Kentucky history. Frantz's family followed Daniel Boone into Kentucky in 1792 and settled in Madison County where her family still resides. Frantz is a former schoolteacher and social worker who currently lives in the misty woods of Washington state with her husband and two sons, whom she homeschools.

ABOUT THE BOOK

THE FRONTIERSMAN'S DAUGHTER
by Laura Frantz
Published by Baker/Revell Publishing

Lovely but tough as nails, Lael Click is the daughter of a celebrated frontiersman. Haunted by her father's former captivity with the Shawnee Indians, as well as the secret sins of her family's past, Lael comes of age in the fragile Kentucky settlement her father founded.

Though she faces the loss of a childhood love, a dangerous family feud, and the affection of a Shawnee warrior, Lael draws strength from the rugged land she calls home, and from Ma Horn, a distant relative who shows her the healing ways of herbs and roots found in the hills.

But the arrival of an outlander doctor threatens her view of the world, God, and herself--and the power of grace and redemption. This epic novel gives readers a glimpse into the simple yet daring lives of the pioneers who first crossed the Appalachians, all through the courageous eyes of a determined young woman.

Laura Frantz's debut novel offers a feast for readers of historical fiction and romance lovers alike.

MY REVIEW

Many of my readers know I have a definite love and passion for the Colonial era of the United States. My first 3 books were set in that time period, amidst the birth of a new nation and the strength of the colonists who made that nation a reality.

Laura Frantz captures the essence of that period with painstaking accuracy. The characters are well developed and believable, each with a rather distinct voice. A treasure trove of historical tidbits and details are interwoven in a way that doesn't take the reader out of the story, but in fact plunges you deeper into the world of the characters.

But what I loved the most was the fact that this author didn't shy away from the harsh realities of living on the frontier. She didn't dwell on the horrific aspects either, but showcased them in a way that painted a clear picture of the struggle, yet left you filling in the blanks for the rest.

This is not a cookie-cutter portrayal of the colonial frontier. Men and women alike will find themselves immersed in this story in different ways, but both can find enjoyment.

Kudos to Laura Frantz on her debut novel! Quite a success!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

In the summer of 2006, two stories appeared in the newspaper. One was a huge, national story; the other a smaller, local-interest item. I wondered what it might look like if those two stories conceived a child. Boom! I had the entire plot for The Familiar Stranger. It will be interesting to see if readers can figure out which stories inspired the book.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

Any character has some aspect of my personality, for better or worse. I can only write what I know. I've seen a richness develop in my writing as I've grown in my faith and walked through some valleys in the last decade.

Denise and Craig's story is based on the lessons of forgiveness God taught me when my marriage fell apart...the first time. Accordingly, many of the emotions Denise goes through correspond to what I felt, though our situations differ. However, I also wanted to really understand the male perspective, so Craig had parts of me in him as well. The path away from God and following temptation is something we can all recognize and, unfortunately, identify with.

During the editing process and years after my husband and I reunited, our marriage of thirteen years unexpectedly ended. The words I had written as a happily married woman ministered to me in my singleness. My heart's hope is that this book will lead people to Live Transparently—Forgive Extravagantly!

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

My hero would be Double Fudge. Hidden secrets means he's lying in both his professional and personal lives, but he has the potential to be delicious. Oh, and lots of women are attracted to him, which tends to be true of chocolate. ;)

Denise I would describe as a lemon sherbet. She's blonde, a little bit tart while still refreshing, and worried about calories!

4. Are there any themes in The Familiar Stranger that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

If reading The Familiar Stranger makes even one man or woman be more honest with his or her spouse or delve into trust issues in a healthy way, I'll consider it a success. The recent changes in my life—losing my husband, facing finding a "real" job, selling my home—have done nothing but solidify what I hope to be the theme of the book and my life: Live Transparently—Forgive Extravagantly. Maybe there's a hurting heart that can find a new path to forgiveness because of the story.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

Most difficult part to write: I was in the middle of revisions when my marriage fell apart. God orchestrated it so that I was beefing up a "struggle with forgiveness" scene in those first few weeks of singleness. While aspects of that were hard to deal with, the very words I thought would help someone else ministered to me.

Favorite: I have a scene involving a Krispy Kreme donut that was particularly tantalizing to write. I laugh every time I read it. Also, I had to take a research trip to Multnomah Falls in the gorgeous Columbia Gorge. Using the beauty of that place in a scene was a lot of fun.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

I’m about 1/5 of the way through my next manuscript, Unafraid, a story about a girl's kidnapping, and how her life unfolds because of the trauma. One of my characters is a PI, so I’m having loads of fun with the research.

The humor Sherrie Ashcraft (my sometime co-author and always mother) and I display in our infrequent, humorous newsletters has garnered the attention of an editor. You just might see a funny, non-fiction cooperative work from the Ashberry Ladies at some point in time. You can sign up for that newsletter at www.ashberrylane.net/update.aspx. By signing up, you will be entered to win a 4GB iPod Shuffle or free books for the life of my writing career.

Oh, and I have a funky TV-based devotional a house is interested in. Busy, busy, busy!
