Amish Love & Author Cindy Woodsmall on ABC's Nightline!

A good friend of mine and "adopted sister" has recently appeared on ABC's Nightline in a fantastic interview. I'm thrilled beyond words to see Cindy's success with her novels and am happy to share more about them here.

AMISH LOVE

What's all the hubbub about Amish fiction? Major media outlets like Time and ABC Nightline are covering it, and authors like Cindy Woodsmall are making the New York Times bestseller list regularly. What makes these books so interesting?

Check out the recent ABC Nightline piece here about Cindy and her titles: When the Heart Cries, When the Morning Comes, and When the Soul Mends. It's an intriguing look at Amish culture and the time Cindy has spent with Amish friends.

And don't forget that Cindy's new book The Hope of Refuge hits store shelves August 11, and is available for preorder now.

Here's a blurb about it:

Raised in foster care and now the widowed mother of a little girl, Cara Moore struggles against poverty, fear, and a relentless stalker. When a trail of memories leads Cara and Lori out of New York City toward an Amish community, she follows every lead, eager for answers and a fresh start. She discovers that long-held secrets about her family history ripple beneath the surface of Dry Lake, Pennsylvania, and it’s no place for an outsider. But one Amish man, Ephraim Mast, dares to fulfill the command he believes that he received from God–"Be me to her"– despite how it threatens his way of life.

Completely opposite of the hard, untrusting Cara, Ephraim's sister Deborah also finds her dreams crumbling when the man she has pledged to build a life with begins withdrawing from Deborah and his community, including his mother, Ada Stoltzfus. Can the run-down house that Ada envisions transforming unite them toward a common purpose–or push Mahlon away forever? While Ephraim is trying to do what he believes is right, will he be shunned and lose everything–including the guarded single mother who simply longs for a better life?

Buy it today!

And don't forget to check out Cindy's New York Times best-selling novels from her first series, Sisters of the Quilt. The titles can be found above.

If you've read any of the first 3 books, please share your thoughts by leaving a comment. I'll be doing a drawing for a free book (title to be named later) from the comments left.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Tiffany, thanks for including me on your blog. Your questions are thoughtful and creative.

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I love Psalm 139—the entire chapter. Every time I read it I’m reminded there is nothing about me or my circumstances that God does not know. I’m never out of His sight, and no matter how challenging the situations in my life may be nothing is too difficult for God to solve. Throughout the years, I’ve turned to these verses for comfort.

My own life has been littered with impossible situations. God has been faithful. He’s never let me down—offering mercy, strength and hope in the darkest places. He’s solved my impossible dilemmas and has carried me when I’ve had no strength. Although He didn’t always answer my prayers the way I’d hoped, He never failed to do what was best.

In the Sydney Cove series John and Hannah have faced ghastly trials and yet their faith has been unwavering . . . well for the most part—they are human after all. I wanted the final book in the series to speak loudly to their faith and to God’s, so I threw a worse case scenario at my protagonists, then waited and watched to see what God would do.

It’s my hope that readers will relate to John and Hannah as I have.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

This is a difficult question. My personal experiences always affect my characters. I try to see through their eyes rather than my own, but my perspective rubs off on the people in my stories, to some degree. However, I’ve never created a character who was just like me.

In Enduring Love the overall question presented (Is God sufficient? Is He wise enough and powerful enough to solve this calamity? Could this terrible thing be His will?) stems from my own experiences. When I’ve been in the midst of a storm I’ve asked the questions above and more and wondered how God could resolve my present disaster. John and Hannah also question, yet hang on to the Lord, believing He holds their lives in His hands.

John’s commitment to honor at all costs is more powerful than my own. In the time and place of this story he had few choices, but if I were in his position I’m sure I would have fought harder to have MY OWN WAY. John sought another answer, but when the law was clearly set before him, he fully relinquished his personal rights.

Hannah is someone I would like to be. While living in London, her parents provided her with a strong spiritual foundation. Throughout this story that foundation remained with her, yet she faltered (that’s me). However, in the end it was her steadfast faith and strength of character that made it possible for her to make the hard choices, do the right thing, offer her life a sacrifice and to love the unlovable.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

This is a great question and one I’ve never had before. It took a bit of thought.

John is vanilla. Not because he’s boring but because vanilla is an honest, straight forward flavor. It does not pretend to be something it’s not and there are no other flavors to cover its simple purity. John is devoted to God. He works hard, he loves and cares for his family and he’s dedicated to righteousness. He’s a straight up kind of guy.

I think Hannah would be strawberry (the kind with chunks of berries). It’s a delectable and delicate flavor with bites of sweet fruity surprises. The surprises are like the Holy Spirit which is powerfully evident in Hannah’s life. And strawberries represent the fruit of the Holy Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. All fruit demonstrated in Hannah.

4. Are there any themes in Enduring Love that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

When I began writing this story I knew I wanted to present the theme I mentioned above—Nothing is too difficult for God. When we face the impossible, He is our only help.

The issue of forgiveness developed as the story grew. It became apparent to me that there would be much to forgive and if John and Hannah were going to be able to move beyond their present painful circumstances to a place of healing they’d have to forgive the wrongs done to them and to one another.

Something that surprised me had to do with the boy, Thomas. John and Hannah took him into their home after he’d lost his parents and his sister. Understandably he was
wary of people and life.

He eventually finds happiness, but when his world is again sent spinning and his security is ripped away he wonders whether or not pure love truly exists. It’s through God’s provision and John and Hannah’s unwavering love for him that he grows to understand the value of his own life. Even though adopted, he is of no less worth than a child born into the Bradshaw family. We, as well, are adopted into God’s family, yet we are fully His children with all the rights bestowed to a child of the Living God.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The opening pages of a book are always the most difficult for me, particularly in a series. By the time I get to book three a lot has happened. To catch up readers or to inform those who haven’t read books one and two I’ve got to insert important information so they’re not lost. It’s not easy to do without including back story. In the book Enduring Love this was especially difficult because the opening scene includes six characters. I struggled to find a way to help readers know who these people are without intruding into the scene too much. To be truthful, I’m still not completely happy with the end result.

Once I pushed into the first chapter, however, it became one of my favorite segments of the story. Introducing the dilemma was great fun. Those moments, when John and Hannah see the truth of what is about to befall them, are high tension, which is always exciting to write.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

Touching the Clouds, book one in the Alaskan Skies Series, will release next spring. I’ve just completed book one in the series. It’s been a challenge—lots to learn, but great fun. The story has a different flavor than the Sydney Cove series so making the transition was a bit difficult, but I’ve had a good time and can’t wait to see it on bookstore shelves.

It’s the story of Kate, a bush pilot, and a man named Paul, both transplants from the lower forty-eight to Alaska. Each has a history they hope to leave behind. One has too much to prove while the other is simply trying to hide from the past.

It’s a story filled with fun, drama and adventure.

The residents' gossip is revealing all kinds of motives for murder. Gertrude Herrman is out looking for love in the form of Thomas Philcher (or is it love of his fat wallet instead?), and Polly's fall eliminates Gertrude's competition once and for all. Otis Payne, the venerable director of Bridgeton Towers, is over a barrel when his wife demands cash--or else she'll carry on without him. Mitzi Mullins's penchant for rhyme puts her in direct line as perpetrator of the crime, and Sue Mie's mistake seals Polly's fate.

Can LaTisha stay on her achin' feet, and one step ahead of the villain, long enough to solve yet another crime?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

Polly Dent Loses Grip has a more serious vein than Murder on the Ol' Bunions because I wanted to show the progression of aging. LaTisha gets sick, but even though she must deal with the effects of her aging body, she doesn't lose her sense of humor!

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

I watched my father's struggle with high blood pressure and diabetes, and now I watch my mother's journey down that same path. Both of these experiences shaped the idea for LaTisha's physical struggles in Polly Dent Loses Grip. But unlike my experience, LaTisha's spirit rises to meet the challenge and she shakes off the gloom that could easily overcome her. She chooses to shake off her doldrums and put her nose to the mystery at hand, while continuing the never-ending job of keeping Hardy in line/

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

LaTisha would be Cappuccino Crunch (Hershey Ice Cream flavor) and Hardy would be Deep Dish Apple Pie (Hershey Ice Cream flavor). Double yum! And they would definitely share their scoops with each other.

4. Are there any themes in Polly Dent Loses Grip that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

The main thrust of the entire LaTisha Barnhart Mystery series is never to lose your sense of humor. We follow LaTisha through Empty Nest Syndrome (book 1) to helping her aging MIL while battling her own sickness (book 2) to LaTisha reinventing herself and her way of life (at 60, no less!) in book 3. No matter what you face, live, love, and laugh. These three things are accomplished by keeping your faith in a firm grip and remembering that it is a natural extension of who you are, not a mask you put on for special occasions.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

My favorite part of writing any story is watching the characters develop. I enjoy writing deep characters and bringing out aspects of their personalities in unique ways.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

Your Goose Is Cooked is the final book in the LaTisha Barnhart Mystery series and is due to release with the first two books as a compilation in the Fall of 2010. LaTisha and Hardy are back in Maple Gap and cooking up a storm at their new restaurant, Your Goose Is Cooked, when their deaf chef overhears a plot for murder that just might fricassee the mayor's plans for re-election.

THE MOMENT BETWEEN
by Nicole Baart
Published by Tyndale House

ABOUT THE BOOK

Abigail Bennett was completely in control of her life until tragedy pushed her to the brink of something she'd never experienced: obsession. Now, she's given up everything she's ever worked for to chase down the object of that obsession. His name is Tyler Kamp. As Abigail follows him across the border into Canada to a beautiful winery in British Columbia, her journey is awash in memories of family and childhood, especially those of her younger sister, Hailey. Dangerously beautiful yet indefinably needy, Hailey seemed to take all the risks Abigail avoided. Until now. But even as Abigail races into her future, her past continues to pull her back. Only when she is brought to the edge of her obsession will she be able to come to terms with the tragedy that ignited it.

A breathtaking story about the emotional risks of relationships, The Moment Between explores the cost of regret, the desire for revenge, and the redemptive power of forgiveness.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

The idea for this book was sparked nearly a decade ago when I was a young, high school teacher fresh out of college. A teenager in our community committed suicide, and the ensuing shock and horror really affected my students. In dealing with the fall-out, I learned that many of my students believed that suicide is an unpardonable sin--that since your final act on earth is one you cannot repent of, God cannot forgive you and therefore your soul cannot be saved. Of course, suicide is never the right answer to any problem, but I believe that God is bigger than that. I believe his grace can abound in any situation. The Moment Between is really about grace in unbelievable circumstances.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

The biggest part of me that shows up in this book is a love for British Columbia’s Thompson Okanagan. This setting will forever be one of my favorite places on earth. I feel a sense of home there, even though I’ve only ever vacationed there and will probably never truly call B.C.’s wine country home. Abigail’s growing love for The Summerlands and her sense of place there definitely came straight from my own affinity for the region.

But there are many things about Abigail that have nothing to do with me. She’s an accountant--I hate numbers and still add on my fingers. She has a very dysfunctional family and a messed-up relationship with her sister--my family is awesome and I only have a brother. She’s short and dark-haired and athletic--I’m tall and blonde and a complete klutz… I’ve never really thought about it before, but looking at my list I suppose she’s sort of my alter-ego.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Abigail Bennett would be a homemade vanilla gelato: simple, straightforward, and uncomplicated, but not without a certain exotic appeal--maybe hand churned with bits of vanilla bean throughout. :) There is much more to her than meets the eye, though you have to be willing to really savor her to realize all the many subtleties and nuances in her personality.

4. Are there any themes in The Moment Between that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

Forgiveness is a major theme that plays into The Moment Between from the first page to the very last. I read a number of books on this subject of communion in years past and have always struggled with what it means, who it is for, and why Jesus chose the symbols that he used to represent the ultimate gift of himself--this symbol of forgiveness and reconciliation. I think we often take the elements for granted, not bothering to struggle with the implications of what God was really doing for us with this often misunderstood sacrament. So blood, wine, and sacrifice are all big symbols that play into the theme of forgiveness in this book.

Mental illness, familial relationships, and finding a sense of place are also important. I’d have to say that there were no surprise themes in this book because it was so planned out in my head from the moment I started writing it. I don’t always know my book so well when I begin, but there was something special about The Moment Between from the very first time I put pen to paper and wrote the opening line.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The most difficult parts to write were definitely the suicide scenes. It was very hard to immerse myself in that sort of pain and try to imagine what it would be like to lose someone I love in such a violent manner. But for some reason I felt very compelled to go there--I wish I knew why. People always ask me why I chose to write about this topic, but the truth is, the topic chose me. It grabbed my heart and my mind and wouldn’t let go until I started writing.

My favorite parts to write were all the parts about the winery and Abigail’s growing relationship with the estate owner and vintner Eli Dixon. I love his character so much and I love what he was able to do for Abigail throughout the course of the book. He made all the sad stuff worth it.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next book is coming out in the spring of 2010. I’m just putting the finishing touches on it right now and I’m so excited about it! I don’t have a title yet, but the story is part mystery, part love story, and part emotional drama. It’s about a small town doctor named Lucas Hudson who is called to act as coroner in a routine case when the real coroner is vacationing in Mexico. Everything seems run-of-the-mill until Lucas stumbles upon a second body. Suddenly, he’s pulled into a bizarre, decade-old murder mystery that catapults him from his lackluster existence. When a missing woman turns up unexpectedly, and Lucas does the unthinkable, things only get more complicated. He finds his careful life in shambles and his marriage crumbling around him.

This book was pure joy for me to write, filled with quick dialogue and fascinating events. The idea was planted when I was sixteen years old and a body was discovered in a ditch near my hometown. A young woman had been brutally murdered and her body wasn’t found until months after the horrific crime. She has always haunted me… And now I get to tell my version of her story. I’ve waited years to pen this one. :)

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

After writing Micah as the best friend in both prior books, I felt like it was his turn to have a story. When Ruby O'Shea (whose last name was borrowed from my childhood orthodontist) washed ashore with her girls in book #2, I found the perfect candidate for a happily ever after.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

In Beloved Counterfeit, Ruby struggles with what it means to be a new creation in Christ. Both Ruby and Micah must work through the issue of forgiving themselves and those who love them. Those are common themes for most of use, including me.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

With her red hair, Ruby would definitely be strawberry. Micah, he's rocky road!

4. Are there any themes in Beloved Counterfeit that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

As I've already mentioned, forgiving yourself and others is a major theme in the book.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

My favorite part was the scene where Ruby helps Micah write his sermon. I do believe sometimes the Lord confounds the wise with the questions of the innocent, and that's exactly what happened between those two. The most difficult part was the ending because I didn't want the book or the series to end. There was -or rather is - so much more to the story and so many more characters like William, Clay, and Viola whose stories weren't elaborated upon. Of course they all live happily ever after.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

THE CONFIDENTIAL LIFE OF EUGENIA COOPER releases June 1 from Waterbrook. Here's the blurb: Eugenia Cooper, a socialite in 1880s New York, determines to cast aside her predictable life for just a few weeks—and finds herself up to her bonnet-strings in Wild West adventure. Drawn to an enigmatic silver baron, she must decide whether her future lies in rough-and-tumble Colorado or with the dapper banker awaiting her return.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and I guess you can apply that to writing, too. I didn't envision a sequel when I wrote the first book in the series (Before the Season Ends) but so many readers wanted one, that I agreed to write it. So my "inspiration" in this case, started with a need to continue the story. I was as surprised as anyone to discover that I wasn't ready to pick up after the wedding, and actually started book two almost exactly where book one left off. I had tried starting the story later, more than once, but it just wasn't working for me like I wanted it to. When I backtracked to where book one left off, I suddenly had this bustling, busy story to tell!

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

I always find questions like this tricky, because I really can't say how much of me is in my characters. I try to make my heroines emotionally smarter than me, if that makes sense. And Ariana's eyes, which sort of sparkle gold, or undergo changes to blue when she's upset, are totally her own--mine are green, and just stay green. Period.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Lol, I think someone asked me this before, but I can't remember what I answered. So, here goes: Mr. Mornay would have to be Rocky Road, but by the end of the book he might be something more like, Butter Pecan. If ice cream had rum flavoring, that'd be him. Ariana would be Velvety Smooth Vanilla.

4. Are there any themes in The House in Grosvenor Square that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

The book has a few major themes that I hope are not easily missed. One is that sexual purity is possible, not to mention advantageous, even when people are in love. Another is that faith in God can make the most worrisome situations bearable. Both themes are present throughout the story, but the idea of being tempted sexually is heightened as it progresses, due to circumstances that occur; and of trusting God in danger, because the threats against Ariana increase as the book goes on.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

It was difficult to keep track of the timeline. The whole book takes place in less than two weeks, the period prior to the wedding. And Mr. Mornay, especially, is called upon day and night to rescue his bride-to-be, or try to nab a bad guy, and my editor had to suggest at one point that I give the poor guy some sleep! There are portions when things are going on around the clock, so I had to go back many times and make sure I knew what time it had gotten to be, or, in some cases, what day it was! I was using a graph to help me keep track, but it still got very challenging.

A favorite scene of mine in this book is when Ariana confronts the first man who abducts her, giving him a scold for his useless life. Another is near the very end, when she is confronted by her new husband regarding the charities she has promised to help. Both situations are humorous, so I think those are the most fun for me to write.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

Right now I'm working to meet a deadline for book three in the Regency Series for Harvest House, which is, The Country House Courtship. I don't jave a publish date for sure, yet, but I think either at the very end of this year, (like December) or early next year. Any reader wanting to be "in the know" regarding my future books should just get on my free mailing list. It includes a subscription to my monthly online magazine ("Regency Reflections") and always comes with a free download. I also post new book announcements or new contracts.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

For The Prairie Romance Collection, Barbour chose 12 prairie romance novellas by multi-published authors from former novella collections. For Wild Prairie Roses, Laurie Alice, Lisa Harris, and I wanted to write a three-book Heartsong series set in historical Iowa. Laurie Alice had lived there, and I've been through the state numerous times. She suggested that we use the real, historical lost gold shipment as a thread to tie the stories together.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

I grew up in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, and so did my heroine. Beyond that, the rest was pure fiction.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Constance would be vanilla with bits of peppermint in it. She was always full of surprises. Hans would be vanilla. He was stable and could be depended on.

4. Are there any themes in The Prairie Romance Collection and Wild Prairie Roses that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

In The Prairie Romance Collection, each story has its own theme. My story Mother's Old Quilt is about forgiveness. With Wild Prairie Roses the overshadowing theme is that true love is a greater treasure than any cache of gold.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

Both of these stories were fun to write. Of course, I love writing the romance arc, but I also love writing the spiritual arc. And I love to develop the characters as much as the word count will allow.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next release is Cranberry Hearts also a repack of Heartsongs. Lisa Harris and Elizabeth Goddard are the other authors. They are all three romantic suspense novels. In mine, Who Am I?, my heroine finds out that her life has been one big lie. She has to learn to forgive those who lied to her and accept the love of God again.
